Assuming you're an absolute beginner who uses the hunt-and-peck method on a QWERTY layout, I would recommend figuring out standard positioning for a QWERTY keyboard. The website that can teach you is typing.com. Although it won't help you much with gaining speed, it will help you learn the correct positioning. From there, you can move onto other sites - like monkeytype, typeracer, typer.io, and nitrotype - to practice typing real words and sentences. Practice intentionally, not mindlessly. Keep everything consistent, especially fingering, as changing techniques mid-typing will be hard. On a small side note, decide whether you want to use one thumb or both for pressing the spacebar. Also if you want to be unique, check out other keyboard layouts to increase efficiency; only if you want to change layouts would I recommend you do it now. QWERTY is known to be quite inefficient and less ergonomic than other layouts, but it is the standard popularized one, so choose carefully.

The Art and Science of Rapid Typing: A Comprehensive GuideMastering the keyboard is one of the most impactful "force multipliers" for productivity in the digital age. Whether you are a student, a programmer, or a professional, the ability to translate thoughts into text at the speed of thought reduces cognitive load and saves hundreds of hours over a lifetime.Increasing your typing speed is not merely about moving your fingers faster; it is a holistic process involving ergonomics, muscle memory, and mental focus.1. The Foundation: Ergonomics and PostureBefore focusing on speed, you must ensure your physical setup supports high performance and prevents repetitive strain injuries (RSI).Body Alignment: Sit with your back straight and feet flat on the floor. Your elbows should be at a 90-degree angle, and your wrists should remain neutral (straight), not bent upward or downward.1The "Floating" Wrist: Avoid resting your wrists on the desk or a wrist rest while actively typing. This restricts blood flow and limits the reach of your fingers. Instead, let your wrists hover slightly, using your shoulders and forearms to move your hands.Monitor Height: Your eyes should be level with the top third of the screen to prevent neck strain, which can lead to fatigue and slower reaction times.2. The Core Mechanic: Touch TypingThe single greatest barrier to speed is "hunting and pecking." If you have to look at the keyboard, you create a bottleneck in your brain. The Home Row: Your fingers must always return to the home row (ASDF for the left hand, JKL; for the right). The small tactile bumps on the F and J keys are your anchors; use them to orient yourself without looking.2Finger Zoning: Each finger is responsible for a specific diagonal column of keys.Example: Your left pinky handles Q, A, and Z.Example: Your right index finger handles U, J, M, Y, H, and N.Zero-Visual Reliance: To truly master touch typing, you must commit to never looking down. If you make a mistake, resist the urge to peek. Use your muscle memory to find the backspace.3. Training Muscle MemorySpeed is a byproduct of accuracy. If you focus on speed first, you will reinforce bad habits that lead to errors.Slow is Smooth, Smooth is Fast: Practice at a pace where you can maintain 98% accuracy. When you hit the wrong key, your brain stutters, breaking your rhythm. Constant accuracy builds the "rhythm" necessary for high speeds.3N-Grams and Bigrams: Professional typists don’t think in letters; they think in patterns. Your brain eventually learns to treat common combinations (like -tion, the, or ing) as a single "chord" or movement rather than individual strokes.Bursting: Once you are accurate, practice "bursting" familiar words. Type a short, common word as fast as possible, then pause slightly before the next. This trains your fingers to move at peak velocity.4. Advanced Techniques for the 100+ WPM ClubOnce you surpass 60–70 Words Per Minute (WPM), you need to optimize your workflow to reach the triple digits.Look Ahead: Do not look at the word you are currently typing. Your eyes should be one or two words ahead in the text. This allows your brain to buffer the movements and prevents the "start-stop" jerky motion of novice typists.Use Both Thumbs: While many people favor one thumb for the spacebar, alternating based on which hand finished the previous word can shave off milliseconds.4The "Ctrl + Backspace" Trick: Instead of tapping backspace five times to fix a typo, use Ctrl + Backspace (or Cmd + Delete on Mac) to delete the entire word.5 This is significantly faster for corrections.5. Tools and ConsistencyLike any physical skill, typing requires "deliberate practice." Ten minutes of focused practice a day is better than a two-hour marathon once a month.Tool CategoryRecommended PlatformsLearning BasicsTypingClub, Keybr (focuses on muscle memory)Speed Testing10FastFingers, MonkeytypeCompetitive PlayTypeRacer (compete against others in real-time)ConclusionImproving your typing speed is a journey of transitioning from conscious effort to subconscious habit. By maintaining proper ergonomics, mastering the home row, and prioritizing accuracy over raw speed, you will eventually find that the keyboard disappears, leaving a direct link between your mind and the screen.
